Product Description
Take Control of Your Cholesterol— Without Drugs

If you are one of the nearly 100 million Americans struggling with high cholesterol, then Dr. Janet Brill offers you a revolutionary new plan for taking control of your health—without the risks of statin drugs. With Dr. Brill’s breakthrough Cholesterol Down Plan, you simply add nine “miracle foods” to your regular diet and thirty minutes of walking to your daily routine. That’s all. This straightforward and easy-to-follow program can lower your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by as much as 47 percent in just four weeks.

Cholesterol Down explains Dr. Brill’s ten-point plan as well as the science behind it. You’ll learn how each miracle food affects LDL cholesterol and how the foods work together for maximum effect, as well as:

• How eating whole grains helps reduce LDL cholesterol in your bloodstream
• Why antioxidants keep plaque from building up in your arteries
• How certain steps change the structure of LDL cholesterol particles (and why it’s best for them to be large and fluffy)
• Why walking just thirty minutes a day lowers “bad” cholesterol and cuts dangerous belly fat

With everything you need to stay focused on the plan, including a daily checklist, a six-month chart for racking LDL cholesterol changes, tools for assessing your risk level for cardiovascular disease, sample weekly menus, and even heart-healthy recipes, Cholesterol Down is the safe and effective alternative or complement to statin drugs.

5 out of 5 stars Lower Cholesterol without Medication   July 18, 2010
TN crafter

This is an easy-to-read book which offers dietary solutions to lower your LDL and raise your HDL. Besides walking, there are nine other steps discussed that are simple to incorporate into your diet. I was already eating several of the items but this book specifies exact quantities and tips to help include more of the right items. I can't wait to get my blood tests done again to see how much progress I've made.

5 out of 5 stars Total Cholesterol over 300 reduces to 216 in 7 weeks!!   July 15, 2010
Deborah G. Lewis (Dallas, TX)
I had a total cholesterol of over 300 when I went to Dr. He was really upset as I was having really bad headaches and my Mom had several strokes. He started me on a med, but I was searching for other ways to lower it. Read this book and followed all steps but 1 and also revised my diet to eat mostly beans, fruits, veggies, whole grains and drank only water, tea and coffee. Seven weeks later my total cholesterol is 216. This book is very helpful and you will feel much better. I plan to follow for rest of my life. Thanks for such a helpful book.

4 out of 5 stars Gets results fast!!   July 14, 2010
Bryan Grady (San Jose, CA United States)
This book will help you get results. It did for me. I am a overweight, rather sedentery 59yr old male. My May 2010 blood work showed a Total Cholesterol of 241, Triglycerides of 198, and a Total Cholesterol to HDL ratio of 5.4. Plus my Blood Glucose numbers were awful as well. My MD put me on 10mg of a statin, but no other meds. That evening I ordered Janet Brill's book. Read it cover to cover, twice. Downloaded a copy to my Nook so that it is always with me. I did (and am doing) the 10 steps daily, including walking an hour per day. In combination with a pseudo-vegan diet (I allow myself an occasional piece of fish or some chicken) and the author's program, my numbers showed remarkable improvement in just three months. In Mid July 2010 by blood work showed a 22% improvement in my blood glucose, a 28% improvement in Total Cholesterol, a 32% improvement in Triglycerides, a 1 point improvement in my HDL from 45 to 46. My Cholesterol to HDL ratio improved to 3.8. VLDL improved by 32% as well.
If you are worried about your cholesterol buy and read this book! It could save your life.

5 out of 5 stars lots of good information   May 21, 2010
Kaye Summerhays (Albuquerque)
This book is loaded with good information including the science of what is known about cholesterol as well as the science behind her dietary recommendations. It also has a lot of receipes.....have not tried any yet. I am following the perscription to lowering my LDL given in this book and losing weight and feeling great. Time will tell if it works at lowering my LDL, put I'm feeling hopeful that it will and I will not have to take any statin drugs.

5 out of 5 stars Worked amazingly well for me!   April 8, 2010

I have already recommended the diet and the book to several people. I personally don't use the recipies in the book. I just eat the things Dr. Brill says to eat daily. I also exercise 30 minutes per day as recommended. I lost 20 lbs in three months (from 206 to 186) and my cholesterol numbers went from too bad to measure to really good.

I was prescribed a statin drug about nine months ago and my bad numbers actually went up. Why? Probably because I didn't modify my diet at all. I actually think I ate more cheese burgers during the period between taking the statin and not. My test three months ago showed triglycerides of 499. This made the validity of the rest of the numbers questionable. Three month before that, I had a test that showed these numbers:
- Cholesterol 261 (should be < 200)
- Triglycerides 363 (should be < 150)
- LDL 153
- VLDL 61

Today, April 8th, 2010. I received the results of my most recent test and the numbers are good:
- Cholesterol 137
- Triglycerides 114
- HDL 53
- LDL 65

In addition to eating the food recommended in the book and walking 30 minutes per day, I also took Trilipix (last two months) and four 1200mg capsules of fish oil each day.

If you have high triglycerides, especially if they are too high to measure, you should ask your doctor about taking a fibrate instead of a statin. Trilipix and Gemfibrizol are examples of fibrates. I actually might stop taking Trilipix, just to see what the difference is without it. I am just curious to see how much the drug is actually helping me. Of course, these are my results. The book quotes several scientific studies and provides a bunch of anecdotal stories from other individuals. Ultimately, each person has to do what is right for them, which could be just changing their diet or it might include taking a medication as well. The important thing is to do something about it long before a build-up of plaque in your body becomes your demise. Good luck!
