5 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly useful & informative   June 22, 2010

1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I admit that I received this book thinking that it was another of those touchy-feely manuals on curing minor ailments through some combination of yoga and "positive energy." But when I did finally start looking through it, I discovered that the advice was both sensible and interesting.

The major chapters are as follows: Naturopathy, Herbalism, Homeopathy, Aromatherapy & Essential Oils, Eastern Healing Methods, Energy Healing, Flower Essences, Mind-Body Healing Techniques, Healing with Foods, Nutrition, Diet, and Supplements.

In Chapter 1: Naturopathy, I found advice on healing allergic reactions, bruises (cayenne liniment), burns, and colds. I tried to compare the advice dispensed to common knowledge and found that the opinions were sound, or at least not unheard of. For instance, "sweating therapy" is commonly used in Chinese households to get over the common cold.

If you did an Internet search for any of the given ailments, you'd probably find all of the advice, but having it densely crammed together in one manual is useful. The book is actually very large -- about the size of a 15" laptop, and each page is arranged newsprint style on what actually feels like newspaper (recycled paper?) -- three small-print columns with the occasional sketch drawing.

The next chapter I visited was 5, Eastern Healing Methods. I didn't think it'd be accurate, especially because all of the herbs and medicines would be referred to by their Chinese names (translated phonetically into English), but my parents corroborated much of the advice. For ease of use, the author also included Latin names in addition to Chinese names. I can't say for sure that Traditional Chinese Medicine is useful, but I do think this book accurately reflects the principles and advice of TCM.

The only chapter I skipped out of general disbelief was Energy Healing, which started out with descriptions of the First to Seventh Chakra... I didn't really get beyond that because I knew I'd spend the whole chapter rolling my eyes, but I would say that the chapter is clearly organized and includes lists of characteristics involved in every type of chakra energy.

Moving on... my favorite chapter was 9: Healing with Foods, Nutrition, Diet, and Supplements. This was a particularly fat section of the book that provides detailed information about various fruits and vegetables. Also included are sections on macrobiotics; natural home remedies like ginger footbaths, taro potato plasters, umesho tea; dried foods (dehydration); and raw foods. At the end of the chapter are healthful recipes.

Overall, I consider myself a skeptic about anything outside the realm of Western medicine but found a lot of new stuff in this book. My copy was a gift and something I wouldn't have thought about getting for myself, so this was truly a wonderful surprise.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful reference book to have in your home   May 25, 2010

I love this book. I dont think I can really express how useful this book is. It has such an amazing range of information on all types of healing modalities. I got this book because I was interested in all the different healing modalities that it covers but I didn't want to spend the time researching about each one. I found this book to be very convenient for a reference and to judge whether or not I am interested in a particular healing modality. It provides way enough info on each subject to practice it yourself. This book is descriptive and has many diagrams and black and white pictures to help you understand. Basically someone did the research on all these subjects for you and just compiled it together. Just the natropathy section ware it goes over basic home remedies from acne, boils, and broken bones to trauma, sunburn, and teething is worth getting this book. Be aware that it is huge. It is about 14 inches tall by 10 inches wide and 1.5 inches thick printed in very small print on newsprint paper, but still very good quality book. The info in it is WELL worth the 20 bucks.

5 out of 5 stars A to Z of Naturopathy   May 4, 2010

This book is a great reference for anyone who considers that prevention, and alternative treatments of diseases are your best bet to enjoy a long and healthy life. I could describe this book as an encyclopedia of alternative medicine.
It is filled with common senses advises, and it goes over several healing methods and preventive solutions, that will help you stay away from harmful pharmaceutical drugs and unhealthy life styles. 20 pages are dedicated to naturopathy, 70 pages on herbalism (with men specific remedies, and women specific remedies), 10 pages on homeopathy, aromatherapy.
Eastern healing methods are described into details over 70 pages.
There are more than 50 pages related to energy healing. Flower essences are described in depth as well as mind-body healing techniques (including visualization, biofeedback...).
There are over 120 pages dedicated to nutrition and diets (with recipes and traditional diets). A big emphasis is made on raw food (It is not as complete and detailed as Susan Schenck's The life food factor but it gives you a good overview of good nutrition).
The tone of the book is very neutral. As a registered nurse into holistic nursing, this book is a great reference and a great tool. Anybody at home can use that wisdom to help the body through health disturbances or to prevent issues that otherwise may lead you to seeking the assistance of a more intense and conventional form of medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Medical Reference   March 9, 2010

I purchased this book to have it on hand as a reference. It seems to be quite comprehensive in covering the various schools of natural healing. I like the large pages and the print format used. I'm anxious to avail myself of the knowledge within its pages to use as an option to and/or to augment current medical practice.
